Volunteers In Mission

Frequently Asked Questions
Where will we stay? The church has one shower, a great kitchen and plenty of room. Many teams will stay at the church using bedding (air matresses, sheets, pillows, blankets) that are stored at the church. There are few activities at the church during the summer months. Depending on the month that you come and the nature of the task, we also have families who will host team members in their homes. This is worked out between the team leader and Pastor Whetsell. If there are special housing needs, those need to be communicated to Pastor Whetsell.

What about food? We have a great kitchen and most teams will eat at least two meals a day at the church. Most teams gather at the church for breakfast, morning devotions, and organizational tasks each morning. The evening meal is also prepared at the church by team members. Lunch maybe at the church if that is where the task is or team members prepare lunch and deliver it to the task site each day. This will vary with each team and how they choose to organize. The church prepares a meal every Wednesday evening and the team is invited to join them for that meal. Ususally, weather permitting, we host that meal on the beach of Cook Inlet. Groceries are a little more expensive in Alaska, but we have access to good stores in both Soldotna and Kenai, so there is no need to purchase large supplies in Anchorage.

What other facilities are close by? There is a MacDonalds with in walking distance as well as a Safeway and other stores. A laundramat is about three blocks away and they also have showers which can be used for large groups.

What is the cost of staying at the church? Most teams make a contribution to the church of $5.00 per person per night.

Wednesday Night Dinner

Tonight’s dinner is chili and cornbread with salad and desert. It is a great time to connect with others during the busy holiday season. Next week we will not have the dinner at the church because we will be sharing in the “Progressive Dinner” where we drive from home to home and have a chance to connect at a differenct level. If you are interested in the Progressive Dinner give me a call at 398-2252. Thanks, Richard

Christmas Eve Service 7:00 PM

We will celebrate the Eve of Christ’s birth with a Candlelight, communion service on Christmas Eve at 7:00 P. M. A nursery is provided for pre-school children and younger. It is a service of lessons (scripture readings) and carols with special music from soloists and the Choir. If you are in Soldotna on Christmas Eve, please stop in and enjoy the service.

Harder than it looks!

I am trying to learn how to customize the web page and how to set up folks to post stories to it. It is becoming much more intensive than I thought it would. Isn’t that the way technology always works. It promises so much and then the price tag comes along a few days later. Pray for me and the process. I think it will be great once I get things a little further along the learning curve.

Also, yesterday Thanksgving Day I got a phone call from my brother telling me that our Mom had gone home to be with the Lord. She is finally now at peace. We had friends with us so that did help us thru the day. We hope that you & yours had a wonderful non calerie filled day.

Lord,
Surround Karen and Dick with your love, and let them know the power of the prayers being prayed on their behalf. Amen.

Creating the New Community

We have been working through a series of sermons called, “Creating the New Community.” They come from the realization that the Gospel accounts which we have that tell the story of Jesus came out of the communities in which the “church” struggled, persevered, and survived. One look at the Gospel accounts quickly reveals that the way Jesus is talking about living together is “upside down” from the way the world teaches us to live. This begs the question, “What were the communities like that produced these Gospel accounts?” The Gospels are the result of people living together in a community which professed different values and perspectives than the culture in which these communities existed. How were they birthed? What was the seed that then took root and sprouted into these very different communities that would eventually proclaim a Gospel that has no other purpose but to transform the world in which these communities existed?

Take some time to read through any of the Gospel accounts and then ask your self, “What kind of knowledge, experience, and community would create such a document?”

Have some fun with it and let me know what you are thinking.
Richard

Fall Back

This is the weekend you get that hour you lost last spring back. It reminds me of the many times in my life when I wish I could take the last ten seconds back. Like this morning when I backed out of the carport and turned around in our drive and ran into a friends car which she left there while in Anchorage with the Highland Mountain Kairos team meeting. But then we don’t get the time back we still have to move forward one tick at a time. Moral, Stay in the present and don’t spend much time in the past or the future. Regret won’t change the past and the future is beyond our control. Enjoy the life you have today.
